Gimme Baby Robots - SEATTLE 12/18/08

It never snows in Seattle... until the morning of the Gimme Baby Robots show!  We woke up to about 4 inches of snow in the city, which turned into a big solid ice cube by about 7pm.  We were debating on how many (or few) people would make it out, and were blown away by the number of people who braved the elements to partake in Seattle's first ever G.B.R.!  About 60-70 people blazed Seattle G.B.R. trail, and let me just say that they raised the bar.  Their enthusiasm could not be dampened by ice or snow, they came and conquered.  It was nearly a sold-out show, and people were bidding with purpose.  They were upping the bids by 5 -10 dollars at a time, and the local art represented was insane!  Some of our local talent that participated were Kellie Talbot, Stefan Hofmann, Ryan Davis, Larry Sommers, Sean Genovese, Mike Yoshida, Jesse Burtner,  Noah Overby, Joan Swearingen, Chad Johnston, Eric Mead, Andrius Simutis; so much awesomeness and inspiration, I just could go on and on.  I'm still brimming with the excitement of it.

Big thanks to Shanna and Peter, Chris Knight and his mom Linda, and Eric Mead for helping hang the show.  David Teng Olsen for giving birth to the G.B.R. idea and paving its way to Seattle.  To Justin Donahue and Gorio and everyone who helped out at EVO for hosting and making it happen.  To Pyramid Ale for the keg of delicious free beer.  And especially to everyone who came out in the ice storm to bid on Baby Robots!  See you next year!

I Heart Baby Robots!

Portland was a blast! Thanks Damien and Bryon from Igloo for hosting the show. Gimme Baby Robots in Portland last night was amazing. A great turn-out, fricking sweet-a art, and an aura of anticipation and eagerness mixed in with beer and friendly bidding competition led to one of the most successful Baby Robots shows to date! Thanks to Chris Knight for letting us crash at his place and for putting up with my lane changing antics.

Old and new friends made appearances. Gems from the past Ruby Nichols and Angie Fujioka, and mystical magicians Ben Fee and Alex Mertz got in the mix. Honeybear drove down from Mt. Hood and bought himself original Baby Robots from Todd Lown, David Olsen and Gary Olsen! Way to support the cause!

Mostly, big thanks to my big bro, David Teng Olsen for pulling rabbits out of hats and building an art community that is inclusive, accessible, affordable and down right fun. Your are the Manzilla. Kassie is the woman, she killed it, in style of course!

Thanks for coming out!

Thank you everyone so much for coming out to my art opening and making it a big success! Thank you so much for the support, I really couldn't have done it without all of you. I'm so lucky. The wine was drank, the cheese was all but nearly gone, and the cream puffs lasted longer than I thought, but with 90 degree weather, I guess the strawberries looked more quenching. My grandma and aunts came down from Bellingham, and my dad was there with his artsy party hat on! Big thanks go out to Larry Sommers for helping haul my big paintings to Bothell. Who said mini vans don't get chicks? After the Bothell show, it may be another couple of years before my next show, but I already have some ideas, and will get painting for it soon! This piece is what started it all for my upcoming show "Scenes From the Second Story". I started painting it September of 2006 and I just finished her up for the show. This scene shows a Brillo Box aircraft carrier docking for deployment. The Delta Team consisting of armored dinos, lightning-fast rabbit, tentacled octopus and pincher sharp scorpion emerge into full paisley explosion. Drumming panda and those that have already earned their "stripes" oversee the procession.

"Galactic Noah's Ark; Moon Zoo Mission 4"

This piece is the newest in an ongoing series called "Galactic Noah's Ark". These spacemen have spent the last 4 years traveling the galaxy for endangered space creatures. They have met challenging beasts from giant alligators to poisonous toads, and this goose has proven to be a mighty adversary. With a wingspan of over 6 feet and fiercely territorial, these spacemen have their work cut out for them.

Free Range, Grass Fed

"Free Range, Grass-Fed"
4 4x5" pieces
Oil on canvas
Will be for sale 6/28/08

After reading Michael Pollen's "Omnivore's Dilemma" I got seriously into eating grass-fed beef. I couldn't give up eating meat, but I thought I had better put more thought into what I put in my body. These paintings are an homage to the cows that hopefully get to live more humane lives before ending up on our plates.

Old and New Friends

"Old and New Friends"
Oil on canvas
10x10"
Will be for sale 6/28/08

We bought a bunch of these beckoning cats the first time Jesse and I went to Japan with the intention of giving them away as Christmas gifts. You know how that goes! One is sitting on Jesse's computer, and this one found it's way into one of my paintings. Only one made it's way to it's intended destination... I think. The other toy is one of those hi-tech-battery-operated-musically-stimulated toys that our friend brought back for us from Akihabara (the "Electric Town" part of Tokyo). I thought they would prove likely friends, both from Japan, the old and new school.

Less than 2 months to go before the big show!  It will be up from Saturday, June 28th - Tuesday, July 29th.  I have to seriously buy some new paint brushes soon.  They have been working over-time.  Also, I think the ol' paint fumes are starting to affect my noodle, hopefully the creatures don't start becoming too mysterious.  The anteater has a pangolin buddy that you can meet at the art opening.

This cardinal is dead-set on blending into the background but instead finds a way to bring the background to him. He just landed himself a piece of the good-life, a small piece of that sweet, sweet pie.

"Scenes From The Second Story"

“When Luck Runs Out”
Oil on canvas
16 5/8 x 16 5/8”

June 28th is fast approaching, and I'm happy to say that after many hours of deliberating, Lindsay and I have decided on a name for our art show; "Scenes From The Second Story". Just to name a few that didn't make the cut: "Birds and the Bees, Frank and Beans," "Enter Stage Left," "Not Your Ordinary Peep Show." Those didn't quite seem to describe what we've been working on in the upstairs of our house these past two years. Lindsay's been updating her blog too so take a look at some of the beauties she's been creating! lindsaydavismakesart.blogspot.com

For those of you who haven't heard, we've been preparing for this show for two, yes, two years now. To date I have 15 never before seen paintings finished, 10 that only a few have seen, and 10 favorites ready for the show. I have 10 more canvases that are primed and am planning to have done for the show. Eight more weeks to get those done! For me 45 paintings under one roof at one time is going to be a huge achievement. I hope you can make the opening, it will be a big celebration.

Back from Japan and missing those delicious sushi rolls and Sochu coctails. We went to the mountain resort "Gala" for some mini-shred snowboarding and had a great time with friends, old and new. Thank you Advance Marketing and Lib Tech for a lot of great memories!

I painted 4 paintings for a traveling show called "Gimme Baby Robots 2008" The first show is in San Diego, CA, then there will be ones in Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, Memphis, Milwaukee and Madison, WI. "Baby Robots" is an annual auction show hung salon style. All pieces are under 10x10" and bids are recorded on the wall next to the piece. http://gbr.siamesebirds.com

New Works: "The Bookshelf Chronicles"

Episodes 1 and 2

Oil on canvas

4x5"

"The Bookshelf Chronicles" : A Miniseries, are still-lifes painted right from my bookshelf. The toys that are featured in my paintings have to undergo rigorous training and auditions to make it to the rehearsal stage. Those that make it into the casting roll reside in my bookshelf-staging area. These are their headshots. The select. The Grade A. The creme de la creme.
